Dachshund Chihuahua Mix: Why the Chiweenie?

Dachshund Chihuahua Mix: Why?

At DoxieLife, we are crazy about rabbit dachshunds, miniature dachshunds, and of course standard dachshunds, but why the dachshund chihuahua mix?

Although these two dog breeds are international stars, where does this crossbreed come from, and once again, WHY pair these 2 dogs together? 🤔

We tell you more about this special crossbreed dubbed Chiweenie, which has managed to find quite a number of fans and curious onlookers with over 135,000 monthly Google searches!

Origin of the Chiweenie

Chiweenie

The dachshund chihuahua mix comes from the United States; it is a fairly recent blend that is not a breed recognized by the American Kennel Club.

In France as well, it is a special canine crossbreed that is not recognized by the FCI (World Canine Organization) or the SCC (Société Centrale Canine).

As a reminder, the dachshund breed is recognized in group 4 (with working trials) and the chihuahua breed belongs to group 9 (without working trials).

This special crossbreed called Chiweenie became popular in the 1990s on American soil, and here are its other names to help you recognize them: Mexican Hot Dog, Chiwee, and Doxihuahua.

General Appearance of the Dachshund Chihuahua Mix

Looking at its face, one can easily say that part of the Chiweenie comes from the chihuahua.

However, its ears can also be larger and floppier, like those of the dachshund.

Furthermore, the Chiweenie generally has a longer body and shorter paws, which are not unlike those of the dachshund.

It is important to note that there will be variations within this mix itself, as it is a blend of two distinct breeds!

There are also long-haired variants of dachshund chihuahua mixes.

Possible Health Issues

According to our research, it appears that the dachshund chihuahua mix has a long life expectancy, which can reach up to 16 years.

However, there are certain risks and health conditions that a Chiweenie can inherit from its parents, including: allergies, diabetes, hypoglycemia, dental problems, intervertebral disc disease, hydrocephalus, and hypothyroidism.

Since Chiweenies are the result of mixing two breeds with quite short paws, some of them may be born with paws that are too short to support their body.

This puts extra stress on the spine, which unsurprisingly leads to more serious problems with vertebrae and herniated discs.

Behavior of the Doxihuahua

Chiwee

As the dachshund chihuahua mix combines the genes of the chihuahua and the sausage dog, which are friendly and affectionate, they can also be stubborn, aggressive, and dominant!

In Summary

Everyone has their preferences when it comes to dogs, but this particular mix will therefore not be found in a chihuahua breeder or dachshund breeder for adoption, as you will have well understood…

We simply wanted to inform you about this American trend in direct connection with your favorite dog 🤗

Finally, we are curious to hear your opinion, so tell us in the comments below what you think of this surprising mix between a dachshund and a chihuahua!
