Is the Chihuahua a Fragile Dog?

The Chihuahua is known as the smallest dog breed in the world with a unique temperament, but does that make them fragile?

Although its origins are debatable, the Chihuahua most likely comes from the Chihuahua region in Mexico and descends from the Techichi, a small companion dog of the Toltec civilization.

This little pup lives up to its reputation as a spirited, eccentric, and fun-loving companion.

Furthermore, it is easy to care for and has a lifespan of 15 to 18 years.

Physical Characteristics of the Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed belonging to Group 9 (companion and toy dogs) of the official FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) nomenclature.

Most purebred Chihuahuas weigh between 1.5kg and 3kg and are not considered fragile, despite some common beliefs.

Their height is generally between 15 and 20 cm, but can sometimes reach 30 to 40 cm (size criteria are not included in the breed standard and are not disqualifying).

The head of the Chihuahua is usually apple-shaped, rounded with a pointed muzzle. The large ears are erect and are often called “radar” or “satellite” ears. The eyes are large and often described as luminous.

As for its coat, this small dog comes in both short-haired and long-haired varieties, and all colors are accepted (except for the merle Chihuahua).

Chihuahuas often have excellent vision, and their tails are frequently curved or arched.

Note: Sometimes Chihuahuas are born without a tail due to a reduced number of vertebrae. These are referred to as anuric or brachyuric dogs.

Chihuahuas have sharp claws developed for digging.

This dog breed is generally robust, and even if it is not a hunting dog, it remains very enduring, dynamic, and lively, so don’t hesitate to take it out for long walks together.

Miniature or Teacup Chihuahua

A very small Chihuahua is called a teacup, miniature, dwarf, or toy Chihuahua.

This small size is not a separate breed and is therefore not recognized by official kennel club standards.

The origin of the teacup is simple and somewhat unsettling… It results from breeding the smallest dogs in the litter, which are physically weaker.

Many people are willing to pay more (up to €3000) to buy a dwarf Chihuahua, but they are more fragile than the standard breed, so expect to visit your vet more regularly throughout the year.

Small-sized Chihuahuas were popularized by celebrities who carried their little pets in their handbags wherever the paparazzi followed them. 😜

Chihuahua Health

This small dog breed often performs what is called a “reverse sneeze.”

The dog stretches its head and neck and makes a whistling sound, which may simply be because the Chihuahua has wheezier breathing than its owner.

If you notice your Chihuahua sticking its tongue out too repetitively or unusually, consult your vet promptly.

Standard Chihuahua: 1.5 to 3kg

Not only are Chihuahuas easy to care for, but they are generally healthy dogs, unlike larger and heavier breeds that are more fragile.

Their lifespan is generally long, between 15 and 18 years, and these small dogs are not prone to genetic diseases.

They tend to have heart problems, notably murmurs, mitral valve disease, and pulmonary stenosis.

Some exhibit eye abnormalities or are prone to knee joint issues.

They often have dental problems due to their small mouths.

Finally, be careful with them jumping on and off furniture, which can injure their little paws! We recommend getting a dog ramp.

Dwarf Chihuahua: less than 1kg

The miniature Chihuahua can be very fragile in terms of health due to its origins (monitor its cough; its trachea is small and therefore fragile).

It can easily get injured due to its size and must be supervised.

These small dogs cannot participate in rough play.

All Chihuahuas are born with a soft spot on their skull, like a human infant, so their heads must be absolutely protected during their puppy growth stage.

Also, they should not be left alone with young children or large dogs, so this little pup really deserves to be pampered by its owner.

Regarding outings and walks (which are important—we can never repeat this enough for a dog), we recommend using a harness rather than a collar to avoid pressure on its neck and small trachea.

In Summary

It is a misconception to think that an adult Chihuahua of a regular weight between 1 and 3kg is a fragile dog; quite the opposite. Ask your vet, and they will confirm it. 😉

Your pup will be able to accompany you during your sports sessions like jogging or brisk walking and go out for long walks at a good pace: it will do them good, and they remain sociable!

Remember that this small dog has many innate tendencies and similarities to those of a hunting dog (like the dachshund or the beagle), but it remains primarily a cute little guard dog.
