Chihuahua and Cat: Can They Live TOGETHER?

In general, the Chihuahua 🐶 is known to behave very well with a cat 🐈

In some households, these two pets can even become the best of friends 🥰

Moreover, depending on their respective ages, one may become very protective of the other, and the household will be harmonious, sometimes playful, and relatively peaceful.

That said, since the Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world and some cats weigh three times as much as this little pup (especially compared to a teacup/toy Chihuahua), the question of whether a cat and a Chihuahua can live together under the same roof should not be taken lightly…

Dogs and cats have a natural animal instinct that drives them to protect their territory, and they may attack other pets for several reasons:

  • To establish who is the “boss” of the house.
  • If they feel threatened by the other pet.

Conducting a Tolerance Test for Coexistence

If you want to know if your little Chihuahua (short-haired or long-haired) can get along with a feline or vice versa, the best thing to do is to test their interaction.

It is highly likely that the cat will not tolerate the dog, but in the case of the Chihuahua, you must be careful.

Given that many cats are much larger than this breed, even if a dog starts a fight, the cat can put an end to it.

Cats are capable of jumping on a Chihuahua from a height, which could cause serious injuries to the small dog.

Furthermore, cat claws can cause severe wounds to small dogs that have little protection in terms of coat, such as a short-haired Chihuahua.

Before creating a household with multiple animals, you will want to see if both types of pets will get along! 😊

Whether you have a Chihuahua or a feline, do your best to find a close friend or family member who can bring over the type of animal you want to test an interaction.

Chihuahua and Cat in the Family

Chihuahua and Cat Coexisting

For example, if you have a cat and want to add a Chihuahua to your family, try to find a friend, family member, neighbor, or coworker who would be willing to bring their dog for an experience.

Emphasize that the experience will be 100% controlled and that no danger will be posed to either animal.

When both animals are in the same room, your behavior must be calm and relaxed.

If you tense up, sit and stare intensely at what is happening, or appear worried and anxious, your pet dog may pick up on these feelings.

You don’t want your actions to silently signal to the dog that something is wrong or that danger is imminent (they can sense and feel all your emotions).

-> Keep the dog on a leash and let both animals become aware of each other’s existence. If they don’t seem aware of each other at all, that’s a good sign. It means each animal does not see the other as a threat or a potential enemy.

After several tests, if this is the result, you can most likely mix a Chihuahua and a cat in the family 😉

At worst, they will ignore each other. At best, after some time spent in the same household, the Chihuahua and the cat can get along and eventually become the best of friends.

Some will sleep together (sometimes on top of each other), chase each other while playing, and even sit at the window in “guard dog” mode to watch the house as a team.

In some cases, an older cat will play the role of “mom” to a young litter of puppies.

The dog does not tolerate a cat

There are clear warning signs that will occur before a physical confrontation:

-> The dog stares at the cat: This is the signal that you need to keep the leash short and be ready to take action. When the Chihuahua stares at the cat, it shows that it is very aware of the feline.

-> The dog stares at the cat and is very quiet: Normally, one might assume that barking indicates a problem. But not in this case! If the dog stares at the cat and remains very quiet, it is a strong sign that it is preparing to fight.

-> The dog stares, makes no sound, and lowers its body into a “ready” position: If this happens, separate the animals immediately. It is highly likely that this dog will not get along with a cat and could show signs of aggression.

Precautions with a Chihuahua and a Cat Under the Same Roof

Chihuahua Licking Cat

Here are some tips that can help create and maintain a peaceful home with a Chihuahua and a cat: 😊

1) Both must be fed separately; otherwise, territorial issues may arise. Furthermore, dog food is different from feline food and has different levels of fat and other nutrients (check your boxes or bags of kibble).

While a few bites of cat food are not dangerous for a Chihuahua, you don’t want your furball eating cat food regularly.

2) The Chihuahua must not be able to reach the litter box. The dog could eat the cat’s feces, which can lead to serious health problems and a trip to the vet.

Since cats are more agile than dogs, try to place the litter box in a spot your small dog cannot reach.

3) Give equal attention to both animals. It is true that dogs and cats have strong emotions and can become destructive if they feel neglected or forgotten.

4) Age is a factor. An older animal may have a low tolerance for a hyperactive puppy.

5) Keep a close eye on furniture and objects. If you have a puppy that is teething, it may bite another animal or grab the cat’s toys, which is not necessarily appreciated.

Final Paw

The Chihuahua and the cat can live together very well if each respects the other’s territory and you provide them with the same attention, playtime, treats, petting, and love 😊

If you cannot trust these two animals to get along and there is an aggressive risk, keep them physically separated (in a separate closed room), especially when you have to leave the house.
