Looking to equip your adorable dachshund with a harness and don’t know where to start?

It’s no surprise! Not all dog harnesses on the market are suited to the unique (and long) body of the famous sausage dog. 🥰

The best harness for a dachshund must be designed to reduce tension on its neck and back.

But let’s be clear, there are 2 schools of thought for dachshunds:

Those FOR the harness.
Those AGAINST the harness.

This article isn’t here to tell you whether or not you should use one for your dog, but keep in mind that a harness will exert no pressure on your dog’s throat (trachea).

For our own pup (Néo, our wire-haired miniature dachshund, whom you know if you read the blog or follow our Instagram), we alternate between a harness and a collar.

Life is all about balance, and perhaps that applies to the harness question too…😉 But if your pup tends to pull a lot on their leash, take care of their trachea by opting for a harness.

Harness vs. Collar for Dachshunds

Collars (especially thinner ones) can dig into your pet’s neck, making it extremely uncomfortable and sometimes even leading to serious canine injuries. Harnesses overcome this problem by distributing this pressure around their much stronger chest and shoulders.
An excited dog often pulls out of a collar, freeing themselves just when they need to be restrained the most. A well-fitted harness under your dachshund’s armpits makes it almost impossible for them to slip out.
For car trips, attaching a seat belt to a dog harness or their car seat is a much better option than simply attaching it to a collar.

Final Thoughts

It is best to choose a harness that comes as close as possible to your dog’s measurements and to always measure them before ordering.

Using a different harness will depend on the activity practiced with your companion, which will eliminate small tension points (straps that can rub in several places). Ask yourself what your lifestyle and outings with your dachshund are like.

Indeed, a harness that is too tight can rub your companion’s skin and be painful… If the harness is too loose, your dachshund can wiggle out of it.

So, if your dachshund is between two sizes and you think the smaller size would fit just right when adjusted, it is probably better to opt for the smaller one.

If your dachshund pulls a lot while wearing a harness, you might consider using a collar instead. Or, ask a dog behaviorist to teach you how to stop them from pulling on the leash.
