How to Keep a Chihuahua Clean?

Dog Insurance

One of the most important grooming routines to keep a Chihuahua clean is the bath 😜

Whether you have a long-haired or short-haired Chihuahua, all Chihuahuas need to be bathed to prevent dirt buildup and to keep their coat (if long) from matting.

Unfortunately, many owners leave their Chihuahuas unwashed for long periods, which makes the process even more difficult when they try to place them in a bathtub, sink, or basin.

While bathing is an essential grooming ritual for a Chihuahua, you should avoid overdoing it. It is far too common for owners to bathe their puppy several times a week, and even if it doesn’t seem like a problem, it can easily dry out their skin. ⚠️

So, how often should you wash your adorable Chihuahua?

It actually depends on several factors, such as:

  • Their outdoor activity level
  • The type of shampoo you use
  • Whether they have long or short hair
  • The air quality inside your home
  • How much they clean themselves with their tongue

That said, a good rule of thumb is to bathe your pet about once a month, which should keep them clean without damaging their skin and coat.

Accessories for Bathing a Chihuahua

Before you can give your Chihuahua a good bath, you first need to gather a few basic items.

You may already have some of these at home, but it is very likely that you will need to head to your local pet store for the rest or order them from a specialized pet boutique.

Here is what you need:

  • A high-quality dog shampoo (regular human shampoos are too harsh for their delicate skin)
  • Washcloth
  • Dry towel
  • A pitcher or a large bowl
  • Their best little treats (obviously)😊

Steps for Bathing a Chihuahua

Washing your Chihuahua

Once you have acquired all the suitable and necessary products for your little dog, it’s time to get to work.

To make the bathing process easier and less messy, give your Chihuahua’s coat a good brushing to remove excess hair.

Even if it’s not strictly necessary, pre-brushing helps catch loose hair on the body that would otherwise end up in your bathtub or sink.

We cover the steps for brushing a Chihuahua’s back in a previous article, so check it out if you’re not sure how to proceed. 😉

Be aware that for small dogs, there isn’t really one specific way to bathe your pooch.

Some owners prefer to do it in a large sink, while others prefer the bathtub or a basin.

As long as your back doesn’t hurt from leaning over, it is generally best to bathe them in the bathtub. 🛁

In the bathroom, there is an easily accessible water source, towels, and it’s easy to clean.

Once the bathtub plug is removed, run the water and wait for it to reach a comfortable, lukewarm temperature that won’t freeze or scald your Chihuahua.

Now that the water is ready, go get your companion and place them in the tub.

Some pooches are naturally more reluctant than others to be bathed… so you might have to play a little canine version of hide-and-seek 😜

Remember to try to make them as comfortable and relaxed as possible. If they are nervous or anxious about taking a bath, try petting them and talking to them to calm them down. It is very important to talk to your dog; you are reassuring them, and they know it.

In general, this type of behavior disappears once they get used to being washed at certain times.

When your Chihuahua is in the tub, follow these steps to clean them properly:

-> Fill a pitcher or bowl with lukewarm water and pour it gently over their body while holding their head with your free hand. Try not to get water in their ears.

-> Read the instructions on your dog shampoo label to know exactly how much to use.

Because of their small size, Chihuahuas usually only need a very small amount of shampoo.

-> Lather the shampoo 🧼 into their fur using your hands or a washcloth.

Remember that shampoo can easily cause pain and discomfort if it gets into their eyes!

-> Let the shampoo sit for a few minutes to refresh the coat.

-> Refill the pitcher with water and pour it over their body to rinse out the shampoo. As the water runs over the animal’s body, run your hands through their coat to work the shampoo out.

Repeat this step until the water runs clear and is free of shampoo.

-> Now that your Chihuahua is fresh and clean, take them out of the tub and wrap them in a dry, soft towel. Gently rub the towel against their body to speed up the drying process.

-> Since your Chihuahua did such a good job at bath time, give them a treat (or 2), then pet them and praise them! 😊

Other Useful Tips for Bathing Your Small Dog

For some reason, some Chihuahuas do not like being dried with a towel.

When you wrap them up and try to rub them dry, they may growl and make aggressive noises.

Instead of continuing to traumatize them, you can use a special dog hair dryer on them.

Simply set the hair dryer to a low setting, with minimal heat, and use it at a safe distance from your Chihuahua.

This may take a little longer than using a towel, but it is a better solution for Chihuahuas who don’t like the towel-drying routine.

You can also let your Chihuahua air dry after they come out of the tub.

Depending on how much hair they have, it will usually take up to an hour for them to dry completely.

Remember, however, that you will need to keep an eye on them and prevent them from jumping on furniture while they dry their lovely fur 🐶
