The Dachshund: Famous at the Royal Court

The Dachshund: Famous Dog at the Royal Court

We know that the affectionate dachshund has always been a famous breed throughout history for its hunting qualities or as a companion dog, but which royal families fell in love with them 🥰 and adopted them?

Get comfortable and browse through this new blog post; our team has passionately investigated to inform you about the fame of your favorite breed within royal families. 👑

Dogs have always held an important place within royal courts and centers of power.

As for royal families, they often surround themselves from childhood with pets of all breeds, then grant them a role that is both emotional and symbolic.

Often, this relationship is loyal and lasting, whether in the exercise of power and representation or in the intimacy of private life.

Over time, sovereigns have openly displayed their love for animals, and particularly for dogs, not to differentiate themselves from their compatriots (as was the case for a very long time) but to get closer to them and create a strong bond.

The Dachshund, Known in the Royal Court of England

It is impossible to start this canine tour without passing through Great Britain and the Windsor royal family, where the love for animals is deeply rooted.

Indeed, the one who introduced the famous little dachshund dog to the royal court was Queen Victoria (great-grandmother of Elizabeth II), who had a passionate love for this endearing and affectionate canine breed.

The wire-haired dachshund reminded her of her home country, Germany.

Below, Queen Victoria is pictured with one of her dachshunds; she even had royal kennels built at Windsor for all her pups!

Subsequently, Queen Elizabeth II of England was best known for her passion for “corgis,” but she also loved our renowned dachshund friends and owned Dorgis, which are the result of a cross between the Welsh Corgi Pembroke and the Dachshund.

The Dorgi generally has the head of a Corgi and the body of a dachshund… it is a hybrid breed and a pet not recognized by major international canine organizations like the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale).

Below are photos of the English royal family and Queen Elizabeth II with her popular dachshund terrier dogs during walks:

The Dackel, Notorious Dog of the Germanic World

Emperor Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, was very attached to his loyal and numerous strong-willed dachshunds.

He buried at least five beloved dachshunds in the park of Huis Doorn, his residence in exile after the First World War, and built a memorial to his faithful dachshund “Erdmann”.

He also erected a commemorative stone on the grounds in tribute to his dog “Senta,” who passed away in 1927 at the age of 20.

However, the Kaiser’s dogs were not universally liked and caused numerous incidents by biting foreign dignitaries due to a lack of training and discipline 😜

Many “juicy” anecdotes have been written about the naughty behavior of the Kaiser’s dackels, as he never parted with his dogs (they accompanied him everywhere on his travels).

Henry William Fischer wrote: “Closer to the Kaiser than all his faithful servants, his two dachshunds…” 🐾

In the German nobility, the dachshund was also famous, as seen in this photo below with Prince “Egon von Thurn und Taxis” at the beginning of the last century and his long-haired dachshund:

The Danish royal family also has a great passion for dogs, particularly through Prince Henrik of Denmark, whose love for literature and poetry (a reference to his French roots) was matched only by his passion for our illustrious dachshund friends.

In fact, his famous dachshunds accompanied him on all his travels and were often by his side during interviews or reports.

Today, at the Danish court, it is Princess Mary of Denmark, the wife of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, who carries on this passion for this short-haired dog breed:

Another court in European territory (perhaps the most glamorous of all) passionately loves our dachshund friends… the Principality of Monaco!

Indeed, Princess Caroline of Monaco (with her puppies below) has a real passion for our smooth-haired companions and never misses an opportunity to bring them along to social and formal outings from a very young age.

Final Word

If man’s most faithful companion, and especially our “darling” the dachshund (a purebred terrier dog), is found at the side of the majority of the world’s leaders and sovereigns, it is because this pup represents a wonderful tool for political communication, a sign of empathy and normalcy.

But beyond these political considerations, and above all, our miniature, kaninchen, or standard dachshunds are huge hearts wrapped in fur that we cherish.
