Smooth-Coated Chihuahua: Charm and Character in a Mini Format!

When you think of a Chihuahua, the smooth-coated variety is usually the one that comes to mind first.

Popularized by television, cartoons, and advertising, the smooth-coated Chihuahua is arguably the most recognizable of all small dogs.

The smooth-coated Chihuahua is one of two types recognized by the Société Centrale Canine, the other being the long-haired Chihuahua 😊, belonging to Group 9 (companion and toy dogs).

There are also other varieties of Chihuahuas described by their specific traits. One of these is the Teacup Chihuahua (also called “dwarf” or “miniature”), a common term for very small Chihuahuas weighing less than 1kg.

Full of personality, smooth-coated Chihuahuas are mischievous and curious by nature. They make excellent pets and are extremely devoted to their owners.

It is assumed that Chihuahuas descend from hairless Chinese dogs and ancient Mexican breeds. There are only two recognized types of Chihuahuas: the long-haired Chihuahua and the smooth-coated Chihuahua.

Description of the Chihuahua

The smooth-coated Chihuahua is a small dog with a broad head and a pointed muzzle.

They have dark, prominent eyes.

There is a wide variety of colors, all of which are acceptable according to breed standards: black, white, brown, chestnut, chocolate, blue, fawn, gray, merle, etc.

Puppies sometimes have a molera or a soft spot in the skull, which may or may not close as they age.

The sizes of males and females are similar, with an average height of 15 to 30 cm and a weight of 2 to 5 kg.

The smooth-coated Chihuahua is also called the short-haired Chihuahua. However, its name is not an indication of its coat texture, which can be either smooth and velvety or rough.

Regarding its beautiful short coat, the hair is slightly longer at the neck and tail, and short on the face and ears. 🥰

Care and Diet of the smooth-coated Chihuahua

Smooth-coated Chihuahuas (as well as long-haired ones) can be sensitive to certain foods.

They thrive on a diet consisting of poultry and brown rice. Beef is not recommended for this breed, but ALWAYS seek advice from your veterinarian, who can guide you toward a brand of kibble.

Chihuahuas can be groomed and bathed once a month, ensuring that water does not get into their ears 🐶

Smooth-coated Chihuahuas are indoor dogs and require a warm environment.

They enjoy a cozy place to sleep and often snuggle under blankets. It is therefore important to keep an eye on them.

Also very playful, they love to play and have fun with small toys every day!

Social behavior of the Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are not particularly sociable pets with humans who are not part of their family, and they are not recommended for young children.

A Chihuahua can jump out of a child’s hands and get hurt if not held properly, and they will not hesitate to defend themselves if mistreated.

Many breeders do not sell puppies to families with young children for fear that the dog might get hurt. Chihuahuas adapt better to families with older, calm children who know how to interact with them.

Ensure that young children can only hold or pet the Chihuahua if they are sitting on the floor.

Always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise interactions between dogs and young children to prevent biting or pulling of ears or tails.

Smooth-coated Chihuahuas need daily walks just like any other dog! At least 3-4 times a day for their physical and mental health.

Keep in mind that despite their size, many think these dogs are not athletic, whereas they have great endurance and can cover a good ten kilometers in the same day.

These are small dogs that adapt very well to the human lifestyle and also enjoy playing indoors and outdoors.

The design of the Chihuahua’s eyes and nose makes them sensitive to problems such as wheezing, colds, and glaucoma.
