Dachshund and Beagle: what happens when you cross these two strong-willed dog breeds? You get a Doxle (Doxie-Beagle), an adorable hybrid dog that has kept most of the qualities we love in our dear dachshund.

In this new article, we’ll tell you more about this special mix with our favorite sausage dog! 😊

The history of the Dachshund Beagle mix

A dog with both German and English roots, the Dachshund-Beagle mix is a successful combination that originated in the United States. However, it is currently difficult to pinpoint exactly when this crossbreeding first occurred…

👉 It is important to note that the Dachshund-Beagle mix is not recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club) nor by the F.C.I. (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) in Europe.

Characteristics of a Doxle

The Doxle seems to be a perfect blend of its two parents. It has inherited the best genes and traits from both the doxie and the beagle 😉

Appearance of the Doxle

It is often said that the Doxle is a dachshund with a beagle’s head 😊.

You can identify this mixed-breed dog by its long, narrow body, just like a sausage dog. Meanwhile, its long, floppy ears and short, muscular paws remind us of the beagle’s appearance.

Size of the Doxle

This is a small to medium-sized ball of fur. A Doxle measures on average between 15 to 38 cm and weighs between 6 to 11 kg. An adult male Doxle can reach up to 41 cm and weigh 14 kg. In reality, its size will depend primarily on the size of its parents. Generally, however, it will inherit more of the size of its dachshund parent.

Coat of the Doxle

This crossbreed is recognized by its hard, smooth coat. However, long-haired variants also exist. It most often sports a black, golden, brown, or white coat, which can be speckled with red or yellow.

In terms of grooming, its coat is easy to care for. It has moderate grooming and care needs. Aside from frequent brushing, a bath every 6 to 8 weeks is usually more than enough.

What is the temperament of a Dachshund Beagle mix?

As a perfect companion dog, the Doxle is an affectionate pet that particularly enjoys quality time with its owner. Whether it’s playing with you or curling up in a warm blanket, it’s always ready.

Because of its sweet and adorable nature, it is perfectly suited as a pet or even as a watchdog for the elderly.

However, it can show a playful side and be bursting with energy—a trait it naturally inherited from both the dachshund and the beagle. 😊

As a reminder, the dachshund was originally developed to hunt and dig out small game, especially badgers. The beagle, on the other hand, is known as a pack dog breed widely used for tracking hares in Great Britain.

From these two explosive mixtures, you get a ball of fur that can be lively and energetic. While a short daily walk is highly recommended to help it burn off excess energy, regular nature explorations would be just as beneficial for its health.

Hiking in the mountains or the forest, for example, would be the perfect opportunity to let it live out its true nature as a hunter and tracker for a while.

Living with a sausage dog Beagle mix and other animals

Dachshund vs Beagle

In principle, this is a crossbreed that gets along perfectly with other animals. It especially loves being in the company of its own kind.

In reality, it doesn’t like being alone. Let’s not forget that the beagle is a pack dog used to living in groups. It can therefore be particularly sociable with other dog breeds as well as other animal species (like a cat).

Nevertheless, the behavior of a Doxie-Beagle mix toward other animals depends on the training it received from a young age.

You should be aware that due to its parents’ origins (hunting dog breeds), it is possible for the Doxle to develop its hunting instinct, which may lead it to consider certain small pets as prey.

👉 This type of problem usually occurs when it hasn’t been socialized from a very young age.

However, with good training combined with a healthy dose of patience and perseverance from its owner, it is entirely possible to teach a Doxle how to behave well around other animals.

This is a particularly intelligent dog with a good ability to learn. It can quickly understand what you expect from it.

Note, however, that if living together seems complicated, it is always advisable to seek advice from a professional dog trainer.

Potential health problems of a Dachshund Beagle mix

In principle, the Doxle is a robust and healthy dog. It rarely gets sick, especially if its owner ensures a healthy lifestyle. It is worth noting that a Dachshund-Beagle mix can live on average up to 13 years.

In rare cases, it may develop certain diseases that often affect small and medium-sized dogs, namely:

  • Discopathy: a disease of the intervertebral discs.
  • Hip dysplasia: a malformation of the hip.
  • Patellar luxation.
  • Epilepsy.

Regardless of your dog’s cross or breed, always perform annual check-ups and seek advice from your veterinarian.

Final thoughts

Adopting a Doxle can be a new way to discover a whole different side of our favorite dog breed. Even if the mixed version has its own personality, which is a bit more laid-back than our dear dachshund, it has still inherited the best traits from its parents.

Since this is a crossbreed that is still not very common, we would be delighted to hear feedback from owners currently living with a Doxle.

Share your feelings, photos, and daily life with the community. We look forward to reading your comments in our Facebook group or in the comments section! 😉
